Rest In Peace Lazarus Haupindi

Did you hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete?
Proving nature’s law is wrong
It learned to walk without having feet.
Funny it seems but keeping its dreams
It learned to breathe fresh air.
Long live the rose that grew from concrete when no one cared.

THE ROSE THAT GREW FROM A CRACK IN THE CONCRETE BY TUPAC SHAKUR

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Tupac’s death, this week we will have to lay a brother to rest. He was taken off this earth at such a young age. It’s unfortunate that you had to depart so soon hommie but I guess even God wanted to keep your charming smile to himself in Heaven.
To those who took time to read this, I’m sure you’re all wondering “Then why in the world did this nigga not post a picture of his friend?” Well I decided to let the words paint a picture of this genuine soul for you.

I could go on and on about how you, Tetukeni, Gube, Benny and Moses gave birth to M-Kay the dreamchaser and how much of a genuine soul you were but I know you won’t see this post. I chose this poem not because of Pac’s death anniversary this year but because it best describes you, a rose that grew from a crack in the concrete.
We never give people roses while they can still smell them. Appreciate the people around you.

Rest in peace Tupac Shakur and more importantly rest in peace Haupindi Lazarus.

Flaws in Namibia’s education system

Very often a Namibian child does not fully comprehend the education system of Namibia, they are just told to go to school because that is seen to guarantee them a comfortable life. It is such behaviours by our parents that has planted the idea in Namibian kids that school is about who can remember things the longest. This should not be the case, however this can be attributed to the education system in place.
The Namibian education system is not necessarily flawed, but the Namibian child are ought to understand fully what education entails and this should be the responsibility of the parents and all the stakeholders in the education system. At varsity level for example, a student can fail at least one module and be allowed to continue to the next level/year provided that the module failed is not a prerequisite to any following modules in the next level/year. This approach is not a bad idea at all but it needs to be regulated so that students do not find comfort in carrying any module to their following year.
At the University of Namibia, students are required to have Continuous Assessment Marks of 60 percent and above so that in their exams they only need to get 40 percent to pass, this system has planted laziness among students, because students now aim for 40 percent because their aim is to pass- not to pass well, but just to pass. One then asks themselves how is not passing 60 percent of the work you have been taught passed on as ok? It is such practices in the education system that has led to students to think that school is about who can remember things the longest, and you are smart because you are able to remember something  longer than someone else. That is basically what school is about to a lot of Namibian students. Memory.
Parents also need to give their children the freedom to choose their career path, because we are not all cut out to be Doctors, Engineers or Chattered Accountants or whatever else society deems as a safer or acceptable career path. Students that are forced to do courses by their parents do not usually perform well, so parents should save themselves money and let their kids choose what they want to study.

Be honest with your parents

The academic year has finally commenced and you managed to register and lectures have also commenced. And now that, that’s out of the way, the song that’s dominating your playlist in your new Emona room is J. Cole’s ‘college boy’ because it’s fitting and you can relate.
You were also on the Instagram Explore page, and man you may have a crush. She’s in Windhoek, she’s a student at UNAM as well and has pink braids, you will melt if you see her. And now your head is filled with ideas of how you want to approach her, she seem way out of your league. But you’re brave enough to make a move, so next month your phone is either getting lost or broken, you are just waiting for your parents to settle down after all the varsity expenditures from this month and then hit them with that ‘I lost my phone/ need a new phone’ text so you can use that money and take her out to that nice restaurant in town. Don’t be this type of Student, parents work hard to make this money so do not come up with silly excuses to get them to give you excess money on top of your already monthly allowance. Just be honest.
Maybe you are part of the fortunate and your mom wants to buy you a new mini fridge, she asked you what you are going to put in it, you hesitated because you know you are going to fill it with beer. Again don’t be this type of student, just be honest.

Don’t be a video vixen for free

Being at varsity comes with a lot of pressure to fit and overall just the peer pressure will constantly nag you to get out of your comfort zone and do stuff that is deemed cool by the cool kids, which may necessarily be comfortable to you.
Some of these cool stuff that the cool kids do involve making appearances in music videos, now there is nothing wrong with that, however video girls need to start being serious about their art in Namibia. Video girls should stop accepting alcohol as your form of compensation for appearing in music videos. You are helping these musicians with their hustle, do not let them rob you yours. Internationally there are people who do videos and they take it seriously. No money. No pretty face. Finish. It’s not about being seen on TV. As a student you need money for a lot of things, so stop doing these musicians favours. While you are at it though, do not forget your first priority as a student is getting good grades and all these other things come secondary to that.
Also do not do all these things because of the pressure to fit in, do it on your own will and do it on your spare time not during the time you are supposed to be in class having lectures or in the library studying for a test or doing your assignment.

Are Likes Validation on Social Media?

Social networks have taken over the world by storm, many people have become so addicted to them that they cannot go a day without logging on to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Different people use these services differently, some for business purposes and some to market their personal brands and basically to keep up with appearances.
The sad thing that social media has brought in this world is that it makes people seek for validation on line in the form of likes. For instance so many girls are beautiful but would not believe it unless they got 100+ likes on Instagram or Facebook. It is sad, girls are living on likes, they now need these likes to know that they are beautiful, being beautiful now has become dependent on the next person’s opinion it is no longer how you see yourself. The like options on social media has planted an unnecessary competition among users specially female users and the reason why females are bitter towards each other is because the males have made them think it’s a competition.
Social media has also given birth to a lot of horrible musician that bombard us with invites to like their pages and send us data file host links to their music, people are being artists and making music for the wrong reasons these days. It is all about the lifestyle (which is flaunted on social media) and no longer about the music. The solution to this is role models have to make it cool again for youngsters to read, a lot of autobiographies about celebrities have to be written because these are the type of books young people would be interested to read this will ignite young people to start reading and it will thus give them hope, inner peace and perspective. The youth should strive to engage in productive activities and worry about things that really matter, not how many people like their pictures or how many people they have as followers, by the way there is a life outside Twitter, there is a fleet of other things to do out there.

Engage in fruitful conversations

Engage In Fruitful Conversations

Of late If you observe people have conversation and thus  pay attention to the subjects they talk about  it is seldom  about anything based on intellect. It is always something  that has to do with someone  and not fruitful, there are so many things to discuss, so many questions to ask but a lot of people opt to rather discuss someone’s life, one wonders if  it is so much  fun spending a lot of  time discussing other people’s lives and what they do and don’t do right according to your  books.  It is saddening that most of the conversations we are exposed to whether in a taxi or even on social media are about other people’s lives.  An entire conversation based on someone else’s life. As the youth we need to develop the culture of talking about things that matter and things that build us. Let us do away with engaging in petty conversations that do not benefit us in any way.
There are plenty of subjects to talk about that both the teller and the listener can learn from and build each other. It is sad that conversations have become regular, which is quite lamenting  because regular thoughts and conversations become draining with time and they lose their relevanve.
People are said to be great libraries so if we engange in intellectuall conversations we can all learn so much from one another.  In our verbal exchanges we often flip from one topic to another we must be the determining agents of  our own conversations and ensure that those we are conversating with suggests something more substantial. Lets get acquinted  with every subject matter, ranging from politics to economy not just the latest fashion trends. There is totally nothing wrong with being up to date with celebrity news and fashion trends but it becomes a bit of a problem when they always dominate the conversations and they are not contributing to our body of knowledge. Being an intellect has its perks it gives you perspective on a lot of things and overall helps you be more vigilant, which is sort of a requirement in today’s ever evolving world, so let us be claustrophobic  and avoid being confined to conversations that do not groom us to be better people who are equipped with a vast knowledge of sundry themes.
